Program Description: Discover the value in creating a cohesive interdisciplinary hospice team. From ethics and legalities of marketing to the utilization of a Medical Social Worker and Pastoral at the time of election to Hospice, this program explains the importance of putting “systems” into your organizational culture to support clients, family, staff and volunteers. It also presents the guidance needed for the back office to prepare for potential clients. The program includes presentations from each of the panel members, panel discussion and a Q&A session between audience and panel members.

Program Objectives: Upon completion of this program, the viewer will be able to:

  • Discuss primary laws affecting hospice marketing.
  • Define activities comprising marketing.
  • Assess marketing issues specific to nursing facilities.
  • Describe social worker’s role as advocate for patient.
  • Discuss social workers in a business development role.
  • Identify one way a chaplain makes the pre-hospice visit.

About the Presenters: Marie Berliner, JD has been counseling and healthcare providers, including home health agencies, hospices, physicians and hospitals, in all aspects of administrative and regulatory compliance, since 1988. Her practice focuses on Medicare reimbursement, fraud and abuse, physician self-referrals (“Stark law”), licensure and certification, and other administrative and regulatory healthcare matters. Ms. Berliner is licensed to practice in Maryland, the District of Columbia, and Texas. She has also been a regular speaker (2004-2008) on Medicare issues for TAHC&H, The Texas and New Mexico Hospice Organization, and the University of Texas’ Annual Health Law Conference, and has presented numerous administrator training seminars to home health and hospice providers on select federal and state laws.

Joyce Edwards, LMSW is the Administrator for Brentwood Home Health and Brentwood Hospice. She is equipped with 20+ years of experience providing management to diverse organizations and healthcare-related agencies, including a background in coordinating operations, staff, and administration. Joyce is an experienced Administrator/Consultant with Hospice, Home Health and Assisted Living Facilities. She was a previous speaker for the Nebraska Train and Trainer Alzheimer’s Association and is the creator of Brentwood Home Health Palliative Program.

Sister Mary Theresa Fritz, BCC, NCBF-Adv, CT is a Sister of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament from Victoria, TX. She has been ministering as a Chaplain and Bereavement Counselor for Nurses In Touch, Inc. in Floresville TX for almost 18 years. She is the only original team member of their hospice program left.
