Program Description: Chronic wounds affect 6.5 million people in the United States with an estimated cost of $25 billion dollars annually. Lower extremity leg ulcers are the most common chronic wounds encountered in the home care setting and failure to accurately identify, document, and manage them can result in mismanagement of resources, lost revenue, and poor clinical outcomes.

This program presents the three most common lower extremity ulcers faced in the home care setting: venous, arterial, and neuropathic/diabetic foot ulcers. Clay presents identification of etiology, clinical signs and symptoms, management, and documentation on OASIS-C1. Presentation Date: 8.21.2014

Program Objectives: Upon completion of this program, the viewer will be able to:

  • Discuss the most common causes of lower-extremity wounds.
  • Describe the components of a bedside arterial assessment.
  • Discuss the OASIS-C1 items related to correct documentation of lower extremity ulcers.
  • Describe 2 characteristics associated with venous stasis ulcers, arterial ulcerations, and neuropathic ulcers.
