Program Description: Natural disasters are common in Texas, but many agencies do not have an effective Emergency Preparedness Plan in place. Texas regulations updated the provider requirements for plans effective August 1, 2011. This program addresses the new regulatory requirements and discusses practical emergency plan applications. Topics covered include:

  • activities to mitigate loss
  • preparatory actions
  • triage and communication challenges
  • patient location/needs management
  • staff responsibilities
  • recovery concerns

Living in Texas, it is likely a question of “when” and not “if” a plan will need to be implemented. Be prepared!

Program Objectives: Upon completion of this program, the viewer will be able to:

  • Discuss the updated Texas Administrative Code 97.256 Emergency Preparedness and Implementation
  • Distinguish the 4 Phases of an effective plan
  • Discuss communication challenges for identifying patient needs
  • Identify Agency Staff and Management responsibilities

About the Presenters: Charlotte Patterson is the Chief Corporate Compliance Officer with Integra Care Holdings. IntegraCare provides home care, hospice, and waiver services, and accepts payment from Medicare, Medicaid and private payors. It has over 18 provider number and 38 + offices nationwide. Charlotte is responsible for the creation and implementation of the corporate compliance program consistent with the OIG guidelines; monitoring of confidential hotline; and investigation of potential fraud and abuse. She also directs ongoing training and education regarding OIG Hotspots, state and federal compliance issues, clinical and billing activities, emergency preparedness, HIPPA and privacy issues. Charlotte earned her Bachelor of Nursing degree from the University of Florida and her Juris Doctorate from the University of Texas Austin.

Chris Schell is the Regional Director for IntegraCare Home Health. She has 35 years’ experience in Home Health and has worked as field nurse, supervisor, branch manager and regional director during that period of time. Chris’s diversified experience ranges from nonprofit, to sole proprietorship, to publically held and start -up companies as well as experience in both rural and urban markets. Chris earned her BSN from Creighton University, Omaha Nebraska in 1975.
